Fit Through the Winter

Cold weather and snow are just around the corner and it's time to start thinking about staying active and fit this Winter. Sure, we'll be doing a good amount of skiing and still riding Haven a lot, but when it's 10 degrees out you still gotta get that cardio. The typical Winter workout of years past has been 24 oz. curls down at eli cannons, but this year we're focusing on getting fit for Spring. I picked up this little gem off of Craigslist for $20. If it's good for Tony Little, it's gotta be awesome...right? TYRANT Gazelle Team coming soon!

Friday

It's Just Another Lot Jam

Yes sir, another Lot jam and this one looks to be the last of the 2010 outdoor riding season and possibly the last one EVER! Plans for the Lot in 2011 are up in the air but it's very likely that the property will be sold in the Spring. I don't care what plans you have on November 6th, cancel them!

Thursday

Fargo or Bust!

Schmidt hit the road today heading to his new home in Fargo. Good luck dude!

Monday

Good Luck Schmidt!

Yesterday was the Wayside Trails Jam in honor of Schmidty, he's packing up and moving to Fargo, ND on Thursday. Thanks to everyone that came out and rode, it was a really good time and a great send off for Ryan. The past 10 years have been a hell of a good time riding with Schmidt. Lots of fun memories and so many places ridden. We wish him the best of luck in the Mid-West!

Middletown Skatpark Update

I wasn't able to attend the skatepark meeting due to work obligations, so all this info is 2nd hand from two people that did attend...

The plot of land isn't being developed solely for a skatepark, riders and skaters need to realize that. A small skatepark is being built as part of a larger public park, but there will be space for passive recreation, a garden, and potentially a small play scape for younger children. There is no possibility of changing the skatepark location because the park is being paid for by the energy company. That plot of land is the only space that they are willing to fund development of. If they don't build a skatepark there, the town won't get one at and all the money will be used to build a public garden on the plot of land. The park cannot be expanded or dug down any due to buried pipes and the bordering apartment complex. Apparently the bowl corner seen in the picture below only has 3' trannys. The park builder is working to get the town to approve them being built up to 4' which would require a little expansion of the deck space. Basically what it comes down to is beggars can't be choosers, at least M-Town will have something. The park is slated to be done by the end of November so some sessioning can take place before the snow comes.

TYRANT on Bern

Props to Dave Blachura for "officially" being recognized as a Bern Team rider! The new Bern site launched recently and a photo of Dave hucking a flip off the first hit at The Lot is featured on the MTB Team page. Good stuff!

Craig Samuels Bike Check

Craig reported in from San Fran and this is his current set-up. To be honest, I didn't even know if Craig had a BMX bike anymore cause he was ripping it on his fixie for so long. Craig asked that I stress the fact that this is a custom build, despite the fact it looks like one of the new Sunday completes. It's the real deal, hand built suckas!

Sending Schmidt Off!

So Schmidt is actually doing it, he's moving to f-ing Fargo! We all wish him the best of luck and we're gonna give him a send off jam this Sunday the 17th from 2-dark at his home trails. Come on out to the Wayside Trails and get rad with us! Costumes are encouraged cause it's that time of year. Last years jam here was awesome and dozens of riders showed up. Let's make this one hell of a last run for Schmidt!!

Ten Ten Ten!

Yes, it was 10/10/10 and we rode our faces off. Bry, Jake, Sean Milnes, Jay O. and I rode the Guilford Skatepark for a few hours. The park is a fun layout and the movable bench and picnic table make for great sub box and wall ride set-ups on the decks. Sean was getting rad on his fixed gear and making me cringe....man it's gotta be scary pulling tricks like that fakie wallride while you're feet are in pedal straps! After the park Jay, Bry, and I headed up to the Wayside Trails in Berlin and met up with Schmidty and Mercenary Steve to do some dirt jumping. The trails were running really nice and that place is always nice...cause the soil is moist and it's woodsy and shady. We rode the main line for a bit and decided to get in a few runs down at The Lot, so we beat feet over to Middletown. All in all it was a super fun day with 5 hours of solid riding. I really needed that fresh air and on bike time after last weeks puke fest!

Skaters Edge

I rode Skaters Edge Sunday morning with Jake and his buddy Ryan and the place was dead, like 10 people in the entire park. I threw some metal pegs on for the first time in almost 2 years and had fun hitting up the ledges and few small rails. Jake was hucking himself like usual and he and Ryan were putting the foam pit to good use trying to hone in huge tricks. Jake's day was cut short when he landed hard and snapped the guts of his alloy seat post...that was less than a day old. I'm not super fond of the street course and Skaters Edge but it was fun since I hadn't been in years. A solid Sunday morning session for sure!

Back Online

Sorry for the lack of posts, I was away in Rhode Island for the weekend then got sick as hell Sunday night. The past 2.5 days have been brutal battling a vicious stomach bug. Barf! I'm still super weak and running on empty so I'll be recouping the rest of the week keeping it on the DL.

Thumbs Up: One Year Later

It's been a year since I blew my thumb apart and had surgery and everything is functioning pretty good. I still get a little sore if I ride for 2 or more days consecutively, but hell....most people would. Thankful I got 97% of my motion back and strength back. Thumbs up to my buddy Libby and Dr. Joyce for putting me back together again.

Monday

Sunday Late Day Lot Session: 9/26

Yesterday afternoon a handful of people got together and rode at The Lot. Hector and Cristian traveled up from the Southwest CT area to come play in the dirt, it's always good to see them. Everyone was riding well, having a good time, and enjoying the brisk Fall air. Jake hucked the biggest backflip I've ever seen go down at The Lot...that boy ain't right! I was also pretty stoked on Arnwine manualing the whole roller line and berm and T starting to jump the rollers a little. We chilled around a camp fire and got some pizzas after the session, which is always a fun way to end the day.

Heaven Meeting

So a meeting of the minds took place yesterday afternoon at Heaven and lot of stuff was discussed. Basically, riders and skaters have been given the park and a skatepark needs to get built at Heaven or the place is gonna be torn down and buildings will be put up. The skaters and riders have to decided on exactly how the park is going to be laid out and where the funds are going to come from. It sounds like they'll be applying for some grants and going the fund raising route as well. For more info, check out Heaven in Hartford.

Ben McCarthy's artist rendering of the park. The feedback he got was too much tranny, not enough street.

Sunday

Wednesday

Old School Bling

Thanks to basement ramp legend, Jay Basti, I'm now rocking some OG 1993 GT Burly Bars, in chrome no less! These things are over 17 years old, they were manufactured before Tiny TYRANT was even born, and they are mint! The wild thing is everything comes full circle and big bars are back in style. These gems are 29" wide with a 9" rise and some slight up sweep. RAD in every sense. Thanks so much Jay!

No Bikes at Middlefield

It appears Middlefield has determined BMX should be banned from the park. This is what was determined:

"the size of and distance between park features is not adequate for bikes, given their greater size and speed. Therefore, the risk of collision between bikers and skaters is high. Moreover, BMX pegs will damage ordinary concrete and coping surfaces. With skateboards, the coping typically wears down the board's trucks, not the other way around."

Sounds like some bike hate BS pulled straight off the pages of Concrete Disciples to me! Anyone claiming skate trucks don't destroy concrete is just plain misinformed! After checking out the park I do agree that steel BMX pegs would kill that place, but what about PLEGS or letting in bikes with no pegs. Instead they'll uphold their ban, create a lot more tension in the skate and BMX community, and they're going to have bike vs. skater issues at the park on a regular basis. So lame in so many ways! Why can't we all just get along? The new Windsor Locks park allows bikes, Hartford is gonna allow bikes, Middletown is gonna allow bikes....what's the deal Middlefield???

Haven Halloween Jam

We'll be co-sponsoring the Halloween Jam at Haven on October 24th and kicking in some jackets and hoodies. Get on down there in costume and get rad!

Annual Sticker Order

It's been a year since I've ordered stickers, time for some newbies! The below stickers will be arriving in the next 7-10 days from 123 Stickers and I'll be dishing them out as soon as they arrive!

Sunday

Southwick, Windsor Locks, and Howard's!

Yesterday was a pretty epic day. Steve and I rode the Southwick Trails for 3 hours, we hit up the new Windsor Locks park for a bit, we rode some nice banks with the Enfield Crew, and we hit up Ry Howard's house party till 1:30am. Gotta love Saturday's full of fun! The highlight of the day was a young kid and his WT mom at Southwick. The kid drops into the medium sized line like he knew what was up and attempted to roll the 3' first lip...which isn't rollable...it's a 4' gap! So the kid at sh1t hard, scorpion grind to the max! What's his mom do?...looks at me and says "his step daddy is a motocross champion...he wanna be like him" in the most WT Joe Dirt voice ever! I nearly peed my pants! You stay classy Southwick!

Heaven Skatepark?

I received this e-mail today...

Skateboarding Task Force to hold public input session September 26 at 2:00pm at Heaven. The Hartford Skateboarding Task Force will hold a public input session on September 26 at 2:00pm for the future skatepark at New Ross, County Wexford Park-- “Heaven”. The goal of this session is to solicit input from local skaters, BMXers and others about what they would like to see at a formalized skatepark in Heaven. Task force members are mindful of the history of the space and it is very important to them that any addition to the park be made with the support of the local skaters and riders.

The Hartford Skateboarding Task Force was empanelled in winter 2009 by the Hartford Court of Common Council to explore the viability of a formal skatepark in the City. In April 2010, The Task Force recommended that a skatepark should be built at the City’s de facto skatepark, “Heaven”, New Ross, County Wexford Park atop I-84. The Council accepted these recommendations and since then the Task Force has been exploring funding opportunities as well as creating design recommendations. More information is available at http://heaveninhartford.org/.

Middlefield Almost Done!

The Middlefield Skatepark appears to be almost complete, I'd say a few more weeks max! There are skate wheel marks and bike tire skids already on the cement, so somebody's been poaching it. The place looks rad as hell, can't wait to get over there and ride!

Vertigo Closing!

So it appears Vertigo Skatepark is closing it's doors after 5 years of business. Just like Academy did in their dying days, Vertigo has been letting bikes in once a week for the past several months. Needless to say, it sucks to see a rider/skater owned park and shop close! Get on over to Vertigo one Wednesday night in the next 3 weeks and give it a rip before it's gone. There are some fun lines and a few rad wall rides.

RIP Interbike!

...well it's not dead, just being moved from Vegas to Anaheim next year! Really??? Anaheim! How do you go from cheap booze, gambling and strip clubs to Disneyland and the Mighty Ducks....so lame! Long live the real Interbike, the one that had nothing to do with bikes and everything to do with free swag, free beer, and raising hell in Vegas!

Monday

Lot All Day!

Rode The Lot for 6 hours yesterday, awesome! We had some new faces, a little rain to keep the dust down, some fire, some guns and lots of fun! Loving The Lot right now!!

Sunday

Long Got Longer!

I stretched out the my bike even more today! I added 2 links to my Shadow chain to move my rear wheel back 1/2" in the drop out. On top of that I moved my bars forward 1/4" to give me a little more knee room. So big, so comfy!

Saturday

9/11 Hamden Trails

Steve and I hit up the Hamden Trails today and rode for a few hours. The place was a total dust bowl, but it was still a good time. That place is absolutely amazing! I give so much props to that trail crew, epic jumps!

Friday

Lot: 9/9

A bunch of us got together and rode The Lot last night. It was pretty brisk out, awesome riding weather! The place was kinda dusty, but we made the best of it and had a good time. Looking forward to stopping by the Hamden Trails on Saturday for a little dirt action.

Monday

Jake Break

So all those 8 foot flairs at the Newi. park finally caught up with Jake, fortunately he is OK.

Southwick Trails & Krol's Backyard

Yesterday was an all around kick a$$ day! The weather was spot on...sunny and in the low 70s, we rode all day, and nobody got hurt. Schmidt, T, and I headed up to the Southwick Trails around noon and to our surprise the place was empty. A few little kids on Walmart bikes bombing around for a bit, but then the place cleared out. It was pretty dusty, but all the lines were ridable and we were having fun jumping for a solid 3 hours. A few guys showed up late in the session and were getting rad on the 4th and 5th jumps in the 6 pack line. Looking forward to getting back up there a lot this Fall!

After Southwick Schmidt had to head home, but T and I were still down for some more riding. A crew was meeting up at Krol's backyard to ride the pump track and do some digging on the jump line. We rode the pump track for a bit and then moved the kickers in place on the jump line to get things going. The new set-up at Pete's is very similar to his old one, but it's going to be a good time when it's done. On top of that, Pete got a new Canon 5D Mark II so lots of high def. video is going to be shot at his place in the near future. He was shooting some test clips last night and they were epic! So nice...5D's a bit much for me...but a 7D would be nice. Santa, can you make that happen?

Middletown Skatepark Approved!

UPDATE: I had this info passed onto me from a reliable source:

"The skatepark will be roughly 2,000 sq. ft.
Rampage is a Connecticut skatepark contractor with many years of experience in not only skateparks, but general construction as well. Rampage bid the project using a Who Skates design and if it is awarded Who Skates will be building the park."

It appears there will be a meeting between city folks, skaters, and riders in the near future to confirm things. Pedal Power is a part of the skatepark committee so the riders are being represented! The park is not going to be pre-fab, which is nice. From what I've seen on Who Skates site they make some rad sh1t...they're responsible for the new Windsor Park too! It may be small, but hopefully it's fun!!

It appears the Middletown Skatepark will be complete before the Winter and will be letting bikes in. The park looks pretty small and has a limited number of obstacles/ramps, but I guess beggars can't be choosers, at least the skaters and riders are getting something. A Real Live HellTrack?

So I heard some rumors on a BMX forum that Red Bull was considering building a replica of HellTrack from the movie RAD. I don't know if it's true, where it would be built, etc. but that would be the wildest thing possibly ever. I'll keep my ear to the ground on this one!

Keeping it RAD at my house

Monday

Cutting Edge Newi. Jam

Yesterdays jam at Newington was off the hook. A ton of riders showed up, the most I've ever seen at the park! The start of the jam was a bit delayed thanks to some dumb broad rear ending Ryan Howard's truck full of Cutting Edge goodies, the grill, tent, etc. as he was on his way to the park. After a brief visit from the cops and the usual accident BS Ryan was on the road again. It was great to see Don Pavelka, haven't ridden with him in almost a year...and he was going off as usual! Tom Kalmanidis took home the bunnyhop win at 40" after a long battle with James Nelson and "California" Ethan Pawlak! Instead of a product toss Howard decided to hide all the merch around the baseball field about 1/4 mile from the park. We rounded up all the kids by announcing "Who wants free stuff?" and once we got their attention we told them to run like mad and go get it. Some kids were hustling for that free swag...too funny! Thanks to everyone that came out and thanks to Ryan and the guys at the Edge for making it happen!

I'll have a short video of the bunnyhop contest that T shot up later today!

Friday

Krol's Pump Track

T and I stopped over Pete Krol's last night to check out his new pump track. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much cause the photos I saw of it made it look really small, but it ended up being fun as hell! It took a little getting used to but once you get comfy it gets faster and smoother to ride. With a little more width to each jump, roller, and bit more height to the berms the place would be even more fun! Looking forward to going back and helping sling some dirt and riding some more. Thanks Pete!

Jam on Sunday!

The guys from Cutting Edge and holding a late day jam this coming Sunday from 4-dark at the Newington Skatepark. There's gonna be some free swag from Animal, Eastern, Cutting Edge, TYRANT, and a few others. The bunnyhop contest should be a good one. Past jams have seen some riders getting over the bar around the 4 foot mark. Show up, ride your bike, and have fun...it's supposed to be sunny and in the low 80's. Should be fun as hell!

Thursday

Catskills Run

Finally got around to uploading the photos from our trip to the snake run up in the Catskills in New York. The place was pretty wild and we'll surely be going back!

Wednesday

The Scorpion King has Risen!

Fun session at The Lot last night. Reed showed up with some of the Enfield posse, Chad Allen made the trip over from Glastonbury, and Sam shot down from Farmington. Our usual local crew was there and everybody was flowing the lines clean...cause they're running really nice right now. The highlight of the day was Reed clicking a lookback over the hip in the small set and super casing. He got shop straight to a scorpion grind and it wasn't pretty. I thought for sure the dude was out cold, but he managed to get to his feet and wipe off some of the 10 lbs. of dirt he had on his face, arms, clothes, etc. Scorpion grinds=black eyes and bloody knuckles!

Graffiti Shirts Again

I recently had a request for a half dozen of the graffiti shirts, so I'm gonna be screening a small run of them. They will be military green ink on black tees and selling for $10. I'm also screening up a dozen pull over hoodies, those are $20. If you're interested hit me up on the Facebook page link to the right >>>

Middlefield Skatepark Update

I stopped by the Middlefield Park today and they're making some pretty solid progress. There are a few really original obstacles and it looks like it's gonna be a really fun layout. The drag here is that they're not letting in bikes. I still don't understand the whole "bikes ban" bullsh1t. I'm so over DB skater haters crying about bikes damaging parks. Pegs, pedals, bar ends, etc. are all plastic now and don't chip cement, so please shut your mouths!

8 Years of Fun!

So I totally overlooked the fact that last month marked 8 years of TYRANT. It's very apparent that the TYRANT BIKE CO. started in 2002 has evolved from a very small company into a crew of friends and riding buddies having fun on 2 wheels. I've been brainstorming a lot lately, have some cool new ideas, but I'm not rushing into anything. This year also marked my 30th b-day...and I'm taking care of stuff in the "real world"...looking forward to bigger and better things. To everyone that rocked a pair of TYRANT bar ends...bought a tee or trucker cap...or stuck a sticker on their bike, thanks for the support! Here's to another 8 years of wreaking havoc and having fun!

With that said, I found 20 of the old 2006 bumper stickers stashed away in the basement yesterday. Sure, www.tyrantbmx.net doesn't exist anymore, but just black that part out!
Contact me if you want one.

Wednesday

Half Hour at the Lot

I stopped by The Lot last night for the first time since the Cutting Edge Jam last month. To my surprise, the weed killer Dave sprayed finally kicked in and the the jumps are pretty clean...while the rest of the place looks like the freakin' Congo! The small line is rock hard...a first for this season...the rain and sun combo must be baking them nicely. The new hip the guys built for the jam last month finally firmed up too, it's pretty dialed! The guys rode for a half an hour before it got dark and I had to hit the road. Hopefully we'll have a good session there in the coming days.

Flatland Josh

Josh has only been on his bike a handful of times in the past year or so, but he still has that flatland in his blood.

Monday

"I Just Wanna' Go to Windsor Locks"

If you don't know the story of the above quote, this is it...In my Pedal Power days we'd get lots of kooks off of Main Street coming into the shop. One day some random dude was looking at bikes and when asked if he needs help he just yelled "I just wanna' go to Windsor Locks"...I know, lame story. Well it appears his quote holds true for all of us now cause the new Windsor Locks park looks pretty rad. I will be going to Windsor Locks...soon! Check out the computer models HERE and check out this progress pic I ganked off of Jay Bych's Crackbook page...

New Sherwood

So Highland beefed up the jumps in their Sherwood Forest DJ area and the place is looking mint! Local MTB ripper Chad Allen, who's trails we've been riding the past few weeks, was up there this weekend for the AM comp and got some sweet clips in this little video. Congrats to Chad for taking 2nd in the comp! Props to whoever shot it! It's well done and flows nicely.

Sunday

Southwick Session

Steve and I headed up to the Southwick Trails to meet up with a bunch of riders on Saturday. I haven't been to those trails in 8 years and they are still running pretty well...just mellower than they were back in the day. The session was fun, some of the Enfield rippers were going off and Danny Todd was emptying his bag of trick like usual. After a solid 4 hours of dirt jumping we hit the river on Matty Stills boat on a rope swing mission. The trip up river didn't disappoint, the swing was rad as hell...and we found a 15' tree jump just before departing on the voyage home. Good times for sure, thanks a lot guys!

Thursday

Bye, Bye Basement Ramps :(

So I finally got around to disassembling the rest of the basement ramps last night. It was a relief to get them all apart, but so sad to see them go! All that remains are tire marks on the walls...reminders of all those fun sessions we had...especially my 30th b-day! I'm psyched that the ramps will have a new home in East Hampton with Mike and Zac. It would be a shame to pieces of local BMX history....pieces of the legendary "Whips Basement" get thrown away. Here's to all those High Life fueled sessions and those heads smashed on the ceiling beams. Adios!

Wednesday

Greenside Update

Word on the street is that Greenside Skatepark will be letting bikes in Tuesdays from 6-9pm. Kinda beat it's only once a week, but hell...1 session is better than none!

CLICK HERE to scope a vid. of Jake Honesto mocking it around the bowl at Greenside.

Ripping Falcon

A bunch of us met us at Falcon BMX yesterday afternoon to give the new track a rip. Damn is all I have to say! They really stepped it up and the new layout is legit...and pretty burly! Steve took a scary digger early on but ended up OK and Jake is lucky he didn't die....he was helmetless hucking himself the whole time he was there. I think everyone had a good time and we'll be back there to bomb around again real soon!

Another Dirty Monday

Steve, Blachura, Joe Davis and I hit up Chad Allen's trails last night and it was chill little session. Chad was going off as usual and the rest of the guys were cruising around stoked on the fun little sets Chad and his crew built. I'm hoping to make it out there at least once a week for the rest of the "outdoor riding season"...weather permitting.
